FAQs
What size does my motorbike number plate need to be?
Motorbike number plates must be at least 9 inches (228mm) wide by 7 inches (178mm) high, with characters 64mm tall and 44mm wide). They must also follow DVLA font and spacing regulations.
What happens if I ride with an illegal number plate?
If your plate doesn’t meet legal requirements, you risk:
- A £100 fine
- Your bike failing its MOT
- Potential issues with ANPR cameras and law enforcement
Don’t run the risk! When you buy with Plate Mate, you can ride with style and confidence knowing our plates are road-compliant.
Do you offer motorbike plates for mopeds and scooters?
Yes! Our plates fit all types of bikes, including mopeds, scooters, sports bikes, cruisers, and touring motorcycles.
Are motorcycle number plates different from car plates?
Yes, motorbike plates are smaller than car plates and only require a rear plate, whereas cars need both front and rear plates. If you buy a car plate for a motorbike or vice versa, it will not be road-compliant.
Can I get a smaller motorbike plate for a cleaner look?
Legally, no. The DVLA requires plates to meet minimum size and character regulations. However, for off-road or show use, you can certainly use a smaller plate.
Can I have a different font or spacing on my motorbike plate?
No, UK road-legal plates must use the standard Charles Wright font with legal spacing. Any variation would make the plate illegal for road use. For show plates, you can customise font, spacing, and styling any way you want.
Can I have a 3D or 4D motorbike number plate?
Yes, 3D and 4D gel or acrylic lettering is allowed as long as it meets BS AU 145e regulations and maintains proper spacing and reflectivity.
Are tinted motorbike plates legal?
Unfortunately, no they aren’t. Tinted or darkened plates are illegal on UK roads. Plates must have a clear, yellow reflective background to remain compliant.
Do I need to supply any documentation to buy motorbike plates?
If you’re ordering from Plate Mate, you don’t need to provide documentation when buying your motorbike number plate. This is because we’re based in Jersey (Channel Islands), allowing us to supply plates without the need for documentation.
This makes the process much simpler compared to UK mainland requirements, where buyers must provide proof of ID and vehicle ownership.
