How to Check if a Number Plate is on Retention

How to Check if a Number Plate is On Retention

If you’re buying a private registration, switching cars, or simply unsure about the status of your number plate, it’s important to know whether that plate is currently on retention.

A retained number plate is one that’s been taken off a vehicle and held for future use (usually by the owner) using a DVLA-issued retention certificate. But there’s no instant public checker, and confusion around this process is pretty common.

It might sound a little complicated, but it isn’t once you know the ins and outs.

What Does it Mean if a Number Plate is on Retention?

When a number plate is on retention, it means it’s not currently assigned to a vehicle but is being held for future use by the owner. This is done through the DVLA’s retention scheme, and the plate is stored on a V778 retention certificate.

This certificate allows you to:

  • Keep the plate without assigning it to a car
  • Transfer the plate to a new vehicle at any time
  • Sell or gift the registration while it’s off a vehicle

Plates are usually put on retention when a car is being sold, scrapped, or temporarily taken off the road, especially if the registration is personalised or holds value.

How to Check if a Number Plate is on Retention

While it would be convenient, there’s no direct DVLA service that shows if someone else’s plate is on retention. However, if you own the plate, here’s how to check:

Check Your Documents

If the plate is on retention, you should have a V778 Retention Certificate. This document confirms the plate is held by you and is not currently assigned to a vehicle. It includes the plate number, your details as the grantee and the certificate’s expiry date (typically valid for 10 years and can be renewed).

Use the DVLA Vehicle Checker

If you’re unsure whether a plate is assigned to a vehicle or not, head to the DVLA vehicle enquiry service.

  • Enter the registration
  • If the plate is not found, it’s likely on retention (or hasn’t been assigned yet)
  • If the plate shows an active vehicle, it’s currently in use

Bear in mind you won’t be able to see ownership or retention details unless you’re the registered keeper.

Call the DVLA (If needed)

While there isn’t an online form or check you can do, you can still call the DVLA directly. They can confirm the status of the number plate, provided you have the right details or documentation.

What if You’ve Lost Your Retention Certificate?

Don’t worry, this is a lot more common than you’d think! If you’ve misplaced your V778 Retention Certificate, you can request a replacement from the DVLA.

How to Replace a Lost Retention Certificate

  • Download and fill out form V317 from the DVLA website
  • Include as much detail as possible about the plate and your ownership
  • Post it to the address provided on the form

The good news is there’s no fee to replace a V778 if the plate is still on retention and you’re the recorded grantee. However, if you need to renew the certificate or it’s expired, there may be a fee involved.

Also, if your plate is on a V750 (Certificate of Entitlement for unassigned private plates), the process is slightly different, but that form applies to both cases.

It’s as Simple as That!

Checking if a number plate is on retention is easier than most people think. Whether you’ve got a private registration sitting on a certificate, or you’re buying a plate and want to confirm its status, understanding the retention process can save you time, money, and admin headaches.

If you’re ready to assign your retained plate and need a new set of physical number plates, Plate Mate can help. We make high-quality, road-compliant plates with fast turnaround times and no hidden fees.

FAQs

How long does a number plate stay on retention?

A number plate can be held on retention for up to 10 years at a time. You’ll need to renew the certificate before it expires to keep the rights to the plate.

Can I sell a number plate that’s on retention?

Yes. If you hold a valid V778 or V750 certificate, you can transfer ownership to someone else. Just fill in the nominee section on the certificate and send it to the DVLA.

How much does it cost to retain a number plate?

There’s usually no fee if you’re renewing an existing retention certificate. However, initially putting a plate on retention costs £80.

Is a number plate still mine if it’s on retention?

Yes. If the DVLA confirms it’s on retention and you’re listed as the grantee, you still legally own the plate and can assign it to a vehicle at any time.

Can I put a retained plate on any car?

Mostly yes, but the vehicle must meet DVLA rules (e.g. it must be taxed or SORN, and the plate must not make the vehicle appear newer than it is).
