How to Change Your Number Plate in 5 Steps

Changing your number plate can seem like a bit of a faff.

But really, it’s a pretty straightforward process. Whether you’re replacing a damaged plate or switching to a private registration, changing your number plate is a simple process.

But, it must be done correctly to stay road legal.

How to Change Your Number Plate in the UK

1. Order new number plates from a DVLA-registered supplier

Your plates must meet legal standards. This includes using the correct font, spacing, and reflective backing – and, it must come from a registered supplier. You’ll usually need to show ID and proof of ownership, such as your V5C logbook. However, you don’t have to provide this at Plate Mate.

2. Assign your new number plate (if applicable)

If you’re changing to a private or personalised registration, you must assign the plate through the DVLA. This can be done online or by post. You’ll need your V5C and the certificate of entitlement (V750 or V778).

3. Remove your old plates and fit the new ones

Seems pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to do this!

Once your registration is officially assigned, you can remove your old plates and fit your new ones. You can use either a screw-and-cap fixing kit or adhesive pads (we recommend the latter for a cleaner finish). You can find both on our products page.

4. Let your insurer know

Always notify your insurance provider of any registration number changes to keep your policy valid. If you don’t, you’ll run into fines.

5. Get your new V5C logbook

If your registration has changed, the DVLA will send your updated V5C in the post.

And remember: You must wait for confirmation from the DVLA before displaying your new plate. If you don’t, and end up driving with the wrong registration, you could be whacked with some pretty hefty fines.

How Long Does it Take to Change Number Plates?

In most cases, not long at all.

If you’re just replacing damaged plates or want a fresh set, you just need to order them. We offer next-day delivery options, so you could have your new plates fitted within 24 hours.

If you’re changing to a private number plate, here’s what to expect:

  • Online DVLA assignment: Often instant, but can take up to 2 working days.
  • By post: This can take up to 2 weeks, depending on processing times.
  • V5C logbook update: Once the change is processed, the DVLA will post your new V5C. Expect to receive it within 4-6 weeks.

The fastest route? Assign the plate online and order your new plates from Plate Mate with express delivery. Many of our customers are sorted in just 1-2 days.

You can find out more on how to correctly change number plates through the DVLA number plates guide.

How Much Does it Cost to Change a Number Plate?

To assign or change to a private plate via the DVLA, it’s £80 (a one-time fee).

If you’re buying physical plates, prices vary depending on the style and supplier. At Plate Mate, our standard legal plates start at £11 for single plates, and we offer upgrades like 3D, 4D and 5D styles which you can find on our number plates page.

Then, you’ll need to fit them. Fixing kits or sticky pads typically cost around £2-£5, which again you can buy from us.

Why Should I Replace My Number Plates?

The main reason is compliance. If you don’t replace your plates when they become damaged, are missing or when you need to change your registration number, you’ll be driving illegally and be hit with a fine or two.

Here’s what your number plate must include to stay road legal in the UK:

  • Correct font: You need to use the Charles Wright typeface. No fancy or decorative fonts allowed.
  • Black characters on a reflective background:
    • White at the front
    • Yellow at the back
    • Both must be reflective, but not tinted
  • Legal spacing and margins: No squeezing letters or adding extra gaps.
  • BS AU 145e marking: This shows the plate meets the latest British Standard.
  • Supplier name and postcode: The company that made your plate (like Plate Mate) must be printed at the bottom.

What happens if my plate doesn’t comply?

A few things that you’ll want to avoid. This includes:

  • MOT failure
  • Insurance issues
  • Fines up to £1,000
  • You could even get stopped by police or pinged by ANPR cameras

All our road-legal plates are made to meet current DVLA standards, so you don’t need to worry. If you’re unsure, just drop us a message before ordering.

What if I want to go back to my original plate?

You can switch back via the DVLA. It’s called “reassignment”, and it’s free if you already retained the original plate. Your logbook will update to reflect the change.

Can I drive before the DVLA confirms the change?

No. You must wait for confirmation from the DVLA before fitting or displaying new number plates. Otherwise, you risk being fined for showing the wrong reg.
