Replacement Number Plates
When Should You Replace a Number Plate?
There are several reasons you might need a replacement number plate, and many of them are more common than you’d think:
- Cracks, chips, or scratches – Even minor damage can make your plate unreadable to ANPR cameras, or cause it to fail an MOT.
- Fading or discolouration – Over time, sun exposure and weather can wear down the reflective backing, making your plate non-compliant.
- Stolen or lost plates – If your plates have been stolen, replacing them quickly is essential to avoid legal complications or misuse.
- Peeling letters or delamination – A common issue with cheap or old plates, and one that’s not only unsightly but also illegal.
- Personal reg changes – Switching to a private plate? You’ll need a new set made for your new registration.
- Upgrading plate style – Many customers simply want a cleaner or more premium look, such as 3D gel or 4D acrylic styles.
Legal Requirements and Compliance
Not all replacement number plates are made equal. In the UK, every number plate fitted to a vehicle must meet strict DVLA and British Standard regulations, and failure to comply can result in MOT failures or fines of up to £1,000.
