4D Number Plates

You’d be forgiven if you were becoming a little confused about the different types of dimensional number plates on the market.

4D number plates are essentially a modern, premium upgrade from traditional flat or 3D plates. They feature laser-cut acrylic characters that are physically raised from the plate surface, creating a sharper, bolder look that adds real depth and style to your vehicle.

Unlike printed or gel-style characters, 4D characters are made from solid black acrylic, giving them a clean, high-contrast finish that stands out in any light.

At Plate Mate, our 4D plates are fully DVLA and MOT compliant, made with the correct Charles Wright font, spacing, and reflectivity required for UK road use. If you’re after a road-compliant plate with a bit more edge (literally), 4D is the way to go.

Whether you’re driving a camper van, motorbike, or just want to add a visual upgrade to your everyday vehicle, 4D number plates deliver a premium look without compromising legality.

Why Choose 4D Plates from Plate Mate?

We’ve been designing, printing and delivering 4D number plates for almost 20 years.

All of our 4D number plates are crafted with care by hand in our workshop, unlike some other suppliers who mass produce their plates. That alone sets us apart from many other suppliers who rely on standardised frames that simply pop the letters out.

Here’s what makes our plates different:

  • Genuine 4D layering: We print the design beneath the 4D characters, meaning if a character is ever removed or vandalised, your plate still shows the underlying reg and remains road compliant. Plus, each character is laser-cut from high-grade acrylic for a crisp, defined look that won’t fade or warp.
  • Hand-placed characters: Every 4D letter is manually applied by our team, giving your plate a stunning finish and unrivalled attention to detail.
  • Road compliant: Our 4D plates are made to meet BS AU 145e standards, including the correct font, spacing, and reflectivity for DVLA and MOT compliance.
  • Commercial-grade machinery: Unlike most garages and resellers using traditional printing methods and tools, our 4D plates are printed using the OKI Pro 9541. This is a repurposed commercial-grade printer originally designed for high-end labels and media. This allows us to produce sharper colours, deeper blacks, and cleaner finishes for your plates.
  • Acrylic and eco-friendly options: While many providers only offer one number plate material, we give you the choice of cost-effective, environmentally friendly materials or premium acrylic – whichever fits your brand and budget best!
  • Customise using our plate builder: You can create your own unique 4D plate adding / creating badges, borders and more using our plate builder.

Every order is made bespoke to your motoring needs and requirements. Whether they’re for a camper van, motorbike or just to hang in your own garage, workshop, office space or something else.

Are 4D Number Plates Legal?

One of the biggest questions we get is: Are 4D number plates legal to use on the road?

The answer is yes  as long as they’re made to the correct DVLA specifications.

At Plate Mate, every road-compliant 4D plate is produced in line with UK regulations. That means compliant fonts, spacing, materials, and reflective layers. While 4D plates stand out thanks to their laser-cut raised acrylic characters, they still follow the same legal rules as standard plates.

We don’t just stick letters on a base and call it a day. Each 4D plate is built on a fully compliant design, with the raised characters hand-placed by our experienced team to ensure clarity and durability.

So even if the raised parts are damaged or removed, your plate stays readable and legally valid.

What makes a 4D plate road legal?

To remain road compliant, 4D plates, along with most other plates, need to conform to the following:

  • Uses the correct Charles Wright font
  • Includes legal spacing and margin rules
  • Made from reflective, durable materials
  • Clearly displays the required supplier info & BSAU code

Need something for off-road or show purposes instead? We also offer 4D show plates with even more freedom around fonts, colours, and customisations as show plates.

Fitting Your 4D Plates

The good news is that fitting your new 4D plates is quick and easy. You’ve got two main options:

  • Sticky Pads (Recommended for a Clean Finish)
  • Our strong adhesive pads are perfect for a sleek, drill-free install. One set fits one pair of plates. Just clean the surface, ensure it’s dry, apply the pads, press firmly, and you’re done.
  • Drill and Screw Fixing Kits

Prefer the traditional method? Our fixing kits include screws and coloured caps to match your plate. You can use your current plate as a drilling template.

*Just remember to drill through the front for regular plates and back for acrylic ones!

If you’re not sure which method is best for your vehicle or plate type, our team is happy to help.
